Position Title: Manager, Attorney Development and Compliance

Dykema Gossett PLLC, a leading national law firm, is seeking a dynamic and emotionally intelligent Manager, Attorney Development and Compliance to join our team. The incumbent may reside in our California, Illinois, Michigan, Minneapolis, Texas or Washington D.C. locations. This position is ideal for someone interested in helping attorneys grow and develop successful and rewarding careers.

The Manager, Attorney Development and Compliance will design, implement and evaluate training and professional development programs and systems for the firm’s legal professional personnel, with emphasis on integration, retention, mentoring, loss and risk management and specialized programs. 

The Manager will oversee the firm-wide Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program, facilitate trainings, ensure CLE program certification, and develop a network of external trainers and referrals.

The Manager will work with a wide range of groups and attorneys, as well as collaborate with teams in the professional development, attorney recruiting and human resources on retention efforts, training and development initiatives, diversity and inclusion initiatives, firm policies, and recruiting matters. The Manager will also support firm-wide employee wellness and resource groups. The ideal candidate will thrive in this highly interactive role and will be flexible, creative, and collaborative.

Required Skills:

Collaborate with practice groups on training programs and initiatives to support attorney development. Such programs may include training in the specific practice area, as well as training in business development, client service and fee arrangements, effective presentations, effective responses to RFPs, legal technology, risk management, project management, conflicts and current legal issues.

Collaborate with IT on e-training through the firm’s Learning Management System and competency/training scorecard.

Oversee and disseminate a firm-wide training calendar, intranet portal design, and document management system to enable sharing of training resources across offices.

Provide associates with support and coaching on career-related matters and lead associate mentorship program; maintain records of all mentor/supervisor assignments and make recommendations to improve the program or one-on-one assignments.

Collaborate with practice groups on training programs to meet attorney development goals and client needs; when possible, ensure programs qualify for CLE credit. 

Research and identify external CLE opportunities for attorneys. 

Manage firm-wide CLE budget. 

Oversee tracking of individual participation in internal and external training programs, including CLE compliance in States where required.

Collaborate with HR, attorney recruiting, and firm management on attorney integration and retention programs, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Participate in employee wellness and resource groups to promote employee engagement and connection across the firm.

Analyze work assignment/allocation data to ensure equitable access to and distribution of client opportunities.

Collaborate with the department director and the Professional Personnel Committee on the associate review process to ensure the delivery of useful and meaningful performance evaluations.

Prepare responses for various legal surveys, client surveys, and other external information requests in conjunction with requesting attorneys, marketing and human resources personnel.

Attend attorney functions and be a visible part of the firm culture.

Oversee bar association dues and ethics requirements for all lawyers.

Other projects as assigned.

Required Education:

Bachelor’s degree is required; JD or graduate degree is a plus.

At least five years’ experience working in a law or other professional services firm is required.

Significant experience in developing and implementing adult training programs and designing legal course content; experience in coaching legal professionals.

Motivated self-starter with a strong interest in attorney development and career coaching.

Strong client service orientation with ability to influence and guide others.

Excellent interpersonal skills, judgment and discretion with respect to confidential and sensitive information.

Highly organized and can work independently to drive projects to completion.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and tech savvy.

Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work in a dynamic and complex environment to meet deadlines and daily requirements.

Outstanding relationship-building skills with the ability to collaborate equally well with senior administrative leaders, members, associates and staff across the firm.

High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook and Excel).

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects independently with specific deadlines and adjust to changing priorities.

Ability to use initiative and judgment to accomplish results.

Strong attention to detail.

Ability to travel and work flexible hours (including some evenings and weekends, as needed).
