Position Title: Human Resources Director
Description:

Los Angeles based Musick, Peeler & Garrett LLP has a current opening for a Human Resources Director to oversee the Los Angeles headquarters office as well as four California Regional Offices.

Reporting to the Director of Administration, the H.R. Director is responsible for recruiting all full-time and temporary staff, retention, performance evaluation, discipline, salary evaluation and Attorney/Assistant assignments.  Interview and select candidates, conduct new hire orientation and arrange for training.  Attend meetings with insurance brokers and participate in forming recommendations for benefits to be offered by the firm.  Coordinate with Benefits/Payroll Administrator regarding benefits, salary increases, incoming and outgoing attorneys and non-attorney employees.

Coordinates with the Managing Partner and Executive Committee to implement and communicate the firm’s policies and procedures.  Responsible for advising Managers/Supervisors and Regional Office Administration, developing and administering all policies and procedures.

Direct supervision of Human Resources Assistant, Reception Staff and Floater Assistant.  Also responsible for performance/salary evaluation meetings with all Assistants and annually, with Paralegal staff.

Works with various departments throughout the firm to ensure proper communication of new policies and procedures for all staff.  Coordinate with IT Dept. regarding training of new employees and establishing policy for end-users when necessary.

Required Skills:

           Must understand and apply Federal, State and local employment laws.

           Strong communication skills both in writing and orally.

           Ability to interact effectively with people at all levels of the firm.

           Excellent organizational skills required for prioritizing workload and recruiting efforts.

           Ability to work under pressure and deal with demanding deadlines.  Strong attention to detail and team-oriented.

Duties/Responsibilities

•           Monitor and coordinate appropriate Assistant-to-Attorney staffing ratios and workflow.

•           Monitor and approve administrative overtime worked by Assistants and other non-attorney staff.

•           Generate new hire, departure and change notifications for all offices.

•           Coordinate new hire orientation for new hires for all offices.  Ensure new partners receive and sign Partnership Agreement.

•           Conduct exit interviews for Associate Attorneys and non-attorney staff.

•           Coordinate bi-annual AB1825 training. 

•           Oversee H.R. Assistant when working with Education Coordinator for firm's MCLE program.

•           Recognize potential legal issues (e.g. sexual harassment, discrimination, termination) and discuss with appropriate resources for direction and guidance. 

 

Required Education:

           Bachelor’s degree in related field.

           Minimum of 5 years’ previous HR experience in a law firm or professional services setting or a combination of experience and education.

           Previous supervisory experience of 3-5 years in a related environment.

           Human Resources certifications such as PHR, PHRca, SHRM-CP, etc. is a plus.
